2014: New year or just another day?

Firstly, can I just say, that I absolutely love Google's new year animation, on their home page. Cheesy and right up my street. It kind of reminds me a bit of what 2013 has been like in the media: a party/circus. It just seems like it's all about a crazy dance/song/political scandal etc; The '4' just standing on the sidelines waiting to replace the '3' and continue dancing to the beat of the same drum (notice they're both green-am I reading too much into this?probably). Different face, same situation; which leads me to question whether the New Year really is New or whether it's just another day that just happens to follows on from the 31st December-no biggy.

I see where the draw of a new year's resolution is, though. A fresh start. A new chance. I get it. I think it depends on your mindset. Some people put off making improvements to their lifestyle, instead allowing their weaknesses/failures/faults to exacerbate and waiting until the new year to have an explosion of improvements , in line with their new year's resolution. But, now, those don't last do they? let's be honest. So what on earth is the point? Surely it would make more sense to just be consistent. Making realistic, attainable, goals which can be measured and achieved and then working from the foundation you've built towards consistent self-improvement. Not only is it more practical but the consistent pace is more conducive than the burst of concentrated change that all center around one day of the year.

The only new thing about the new year is the last digit at the end of the year changes. Life is still the same but the change must be in the mindset. You needn't rely on a particular day to make a change. Be better today. Change your perception and you change your reality. So perhaps my new year resolution is not to make them anymore. Instead it is to realize the potential that each day holds for change and beauty. It is an opportunity waiting to be taken. Seize it.

Happy fire works.
